Position Description:

We are seeking to expand our system engineering team within the Space Data Platforms & Applications BU part of SDI. The project involves the continued maintenance and modernisation of bespoke Earth Observation (EO) Payload Data Ground Segment applications.

The client is a leader in providing world-class EO data services to end users. Phase 1 of the project has been highly successful leading to an expanded scope for phase 2 with an optional further 2 year extension. Phase 2 is focusing on refreshing the application portfolio using modern software development and testing practices to streamline service delivery as well as systems engineering.

The role is Nationwide with the ability to attend Leatherhead, Surrey for internal and client meetings on a monthly basis.

Some short trips to Europe may be required for customer meetings.

Clearance is not required for the position. The ability to be SC clearable Is preferred.

Your future duties and responsibilities:

We are looking for a systems engineer who has technical hands-on experience with evolving applications & delivering them into operations, technical authoring skills, and problem solving. They will be responsible for managing their own defined activities, interacting with internationally based operators and customers, and managing suppliers by ensuring they deliver to time and quality. Adaptability and effective verbal and written communication is critical as correspondence with various stakeholders is an integral part of the service. Although no specific Earth Observation experience is required, the candidate must be sufficiently motivated to gain this knowledge and be driven by the customer experience.


• Take ownership of a wide range of work packages as Technical Manager
• Technical coordination and liaison with third parties
• System level engineering and breakdown to applications
• Support systems integration activities
• Perform Technical Analysis, Requirements Analysis, Interface Definition, Test Specification
• Technically run small procurements
• Analyse security status of applications, both proactively and reactively, and apply security best practices
• Contribute to regular client meetings and reporting
• There will also be opportunities to grow in a number of different areas, such as cloud computing, containerised applications and DevOps practices.

Required qualifications to be successful in this role:

Excellent verbal and written communication.
• Ability to multitask, excellent time management, manage client expectations
• Ability to be ‘hands-on’ to create automated frameworks, tooling, and scripts
• Technical writing
• Experience with Bash and common Linux command line tools.
• Understanding of version control and configuration management.
• Excellent time management.
• Excellent customer service.

Desirable skills
• Experience with Python or other programming language.
• Experience with a ticketing system such as ServiceNow, Jira etc.
• Robot Framework
• Jenkins (or other CI/CD framework)
• Understanding of XML and HTML.
• Linux administration e.g. networking, storage, firewalls, security.
• Experience with containerised workloads or environments (e.g. Kubernetes).
• Cloud administration.
